VSCO Girls

VSCO is a photo editing and sharing app that is similar but also very different to Instagram. The app
allows users to upload to a social media feed without likes or comments, therefore there it is more
like a low-pressure Instagram. On VSCO’s website landing page, they state that the app was
created by creators, for a community of creators. When I look through the website and the app, I
notice that the content is a little more edgy and creative than Instagram. The content is more about a
feeling, meaning, or aesthetic and less about selfies, makeup tutorials, and marketing. Content
usually includes art, quotes, neon signs and landscapes.

VSCO girls are a current trend for teenage girls. It really became popular this past summer when this
trend started to accumulate on VSCO. I have a VSCO account, but I never really saw content that
included the trend because I follow mostly art-based accounts. Even though I didn’t see VSCO girl
content on my feed, I definitely heard about it. My 16 year old sister Elizabeth, who is always on
VSCO, watched the trend come to life online. She even started to turn into a VSCO girl as she
began to pick up parts and pieces of the trend. She started wearing scrunchies, bought a Fjallraven
backpack and a knockoff Hydro Flask, and wore her Birkenstocks all the time. Even though she did
all these things, she never actually went complete VSCO girl (thank goodness).

I have been wondering what the big deal is with this trend and how long it will last now that winter is
coming up & it will be too cold for oversized t-shirts and Birkenstocks. It seems like a narrow minded,
shallow trend that only focuses on how good you can make your life look on social media. Even
though I don’t like this trend, I really enjoy the funny gifs and memes that tease it on other social
media platforms.
