Someone Great: An Ode to Female Friendship
2019 on Netflix exclusively. Someone Great was written and directed
by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who was inspired by her own heartbreak.
In the movie, an aspiring music journalist Jenny landed her dream job
at Rolling Stones in San Francisco. Because of this and other factors,
Jenny’s boyfriend of 9 years decides to end the relationship. To keep
her mind off her heartbreak, Jenny gets ahold of her best friends Erin
and Blair for one last adventure in New York City. With a little help of
an outfit montage, a couple fights, and some epiphanies, they have a
successful last adventure at the Neon Classic, a surprise pop-up
concert. Jennifer Robinson describes the movie as a “hilarious and
heartfelt story of friendship, love, and what it means to let go of your
twenties and enter adulthood.”
The movie has influenced millions of people. Since it has come out, I
have watched it at least 10 times. My favorite thing about this movie is
it focuses more on friendship and less on the loss of a lover. Saira
Khan describes the movie as “a rom-com that really an ode to female friendship”. The
friendships demonstrated in this movie reminds me of my best friend Emma and I’s relationship.
Even though we don’t actually have a lot in common, we still support each other, like to have a lot of
fun and also call out each other out when needed. This move doesn’t end with the man and woman
coming back together, instead it focuses on friendship and growing up. It is something everyone can
relate to and will have you inspired by the end of it.
Also, if you want to understand my Halloween costume you better watch Someone Great before
Saturday evening.
I LOVED watching this movie a few months ago! I haven't watched it again since then, but it really does show just how intense female friendships can be at times. It definitely reminded me of my life with my two roommates, and it's a movie that every young woman in our age range should definitely watch!
