Miller Lite’s New Advertising Campaign
Miller Lite just released a new campaign that names itself as ‘the original social media’. Through
their video advertisement, they make reference to the current social media addiction and “follow”
culture. Then they go even further by telling their followers to unfollow their accounts on Instagram
and Facebook. Their going is to have their followers take a step back from social media and instead
participate in ‘the original social media’: drinking a Miller Lite with both strangers and friends. To
enforce this campaign, Miller Lite even says that it will give free beer to anyone who is able to prove
that they have unfollowed their social media accounts. To top off their campaign, the brand has
decided to stop participating on their social media pages for two weeks.
When I came across this campaign, it really caught my eye. There are a lot of other brands, such as
Coco-Cola Co, Stella Artois and HP, that have tried to stand out by taking a stand against social
media. I really like this approach. I think it is important that large brands go against something like
social media when the goal is escape negative trends. I believe that people do need to start
connecting more without the use of social media. Miller Lite’s campaign makes a great statement,
but I don’t think it will make much of an impact if it’s only going to last for two weeks.
