How I Manage Stress

This past week has been a rollercoaster for me. All of my assignments have been piling up and
taking longer than I thought. My older dog Maggie woke up Sunday morning not being able to walk.
My parents took her to the vet and found out that she has a tumor on her spine. A nonprofit that I am
doing a freelance design project for turned out to be a lot more work and due sooner than was
expected. I have also finally began to get over a cold that I have had for the past two weeks. It feels
as if the universe decided to dump everything possible on me at once. It is only week 9 of the
semester and I am already on the verge of burning out.

I believe that what is going on in your head should sometimes take precedence over school work or
other daily events. Yes I am a college student. I have things I am required to do to stay successful
during my college career but I know that I can’t do those things well if I am not in the right
headspace. Everyone gets stressed and everyone has different ways of dealing with that stress.

With all of these events hitting my at once, I’ve noticed some things I do to manage this stress. What
I noticed that I do most when I’m stressed is listening to music. I usually like listening to new music
that I am not familiar with so I don’t have an emotional connection with it yet. Because of this, it's
something that I can do while getting my work done. Another thing I do is play with my dog Bentley.
He usually does a good job at leaving me alone while I’m busy but he is also always ready to play
since he is still a puppy. He also brings a smile to my face no matter how bad of a mood I am in so
it's nice to play with him during homework breaks.  At the end of a bad day, my favorite thing is to sit
at my dining room table and talk to my roommates or FaceTime my family back home. Talking about
other peoples’ day or honestly anything else helps relieve my stress substantially.

The moral of this story is to listen to good music, pet a dog and talk to a friend.

  1. I wish more people would write about how to relieve stress! I use the same techniques as you, and definitely have loaded up my Spotify playlists for when I need a mental break from everything else going on.

  2. I agree that it is very important to take care of yourself and that it comes before school. If you aren't in the right state of mind or never take time for yourself, everything else becomes harder. For me, laughter is my medicine. I love to laugh or make people laugh. No matter how stressed, mad, upset, or overwhelmed I feel, laughter seems to be the cure.

  3. Alexandra,

I have to admit I needed to read something like this and I am glad that I stumbled upon your post. These past two weeks have been really hard on me. I have always 100% but it was one of those period that I just skipped all the classes when the teachers texted me asking about my home work I just told them to give me an F. I'm fine and I understand how you feel. So if you wanna talk or something I'm here.
