The Big Kid Table

We all know how great this moment is. The moment when you finally graduate from the kid table to the adult table. I have a large family so it took me awhile to get to this point. There are a lot of adults in my family so the table has always been full. Because of this, I have been stuck at the kids table for the past 20 years. The kids table consisted of 6 children who were all around my age and 5 children who were at least 15 years younger. You can see how this would be chaotic. It’s always nice to be able to bond with my baby cousins but I always thought how it would be nice to get through a family meal without someone throwing food, refusing to each, or throwing a fit.  In the past year I have finally migrated to the adult table. What I didn’t know about this transition is you actually start to get invited to the adults only dinners.

This past Saturday was my first adults only dinner. It was for my Nana’s 68th birthday. It was a night for the adults to get a break from the kids and have a few drinks. At first I was kind of nervous and didn’t really know my place at the table. Would I sit there & not say anything? Or would I try to include myself in the conversation? My family is pretty outgoing so I chose the latter. The night ended up being full of laughter and inappropriate conversations we could never talk about in front of the kids. It was interesting to see the difference in interactions when children weren’t around. In the end, I was thrilled about being upgraded to the adult table.

  1. This is such an interesting perspective on the process that is moving from being a child to adult in the eyes of our family members. As an only child with cousins that live across the country, I never had to sit at a kids table so reading your story and all about that transition was super interesting!
